Sunnova Production Guarantee: How to Verify Yours

By Olivier Beauchemin · Published June 2026

OwlWatt is independent of Sunnova and all solar installers. This guide presents factual information about how Sunnova's production guarantees and service commitments work — not legal advice or advocacy for or against Sunnova.
Note on Sunnova's financial situation: Sunnova Energy International entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in 2025. If you are a Sunnova customer, the guidance in this article is particularly relevant. See also: When your solar installer goes bankrupt.

Key point: Sunnova's production guarantees and service commitments are in your specific contract. The terms — what's guaranteed, the measurement period, and the remedy — vary by agreement type (loan, lease, PPA). Given Sunnova's financial situation, having independent monitoring and documentation is more important now, not less.

How Sunnova's Production Guarantee Has Worked

Sunnova is one of the largest residential solar service companies in the United States, operating primarily as a financier and servicer that deploys systems through a dealer/installer network. Their products include solar loans, leases, and PPAs. The guarantee structure varies by product:

Sunnova Lease and PPA Customers

If you have a Sunnova lease or PPA, Sunnova owns the equipment and commits to it producing at a minimum level. If production falls short, the contract specifies a remedy — often a credit on future payments. The specific threshold and credit mechanism are in your agreement. Because Sunnova owns the equipment on leased systems, they are responsible for equipment maintenance and repair — more so than on purchased systems.

Sunnova Loan (Purchased System) Customers

If you took a Sunnova loan to purchase your system, you own the equipment. The loan is separate from any service or production guarantee. On purchased systems, the production guarantee — if one exists in your contract — is more likely to be backed by a workmanship and performance warranty rather than an ongoing production-payment commitment. Read your contract carefully to identify exactly what was promised.

The Sunnova Financial Situation and What It Means for You

Sunnova entered financial distress and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2025. This situation is evolving. Key considerations for customers:

How to Independently Verify Your Sunnova System's Production

Regardless of Sunnova's status, your solar monitoring platform (Enphase Enlighten, SolarEdge, or similar) operates independently of Sunnova's software. Access your inverter manufacturer's portal directly:

  1. Log in to your Enphase Enlighten or SolarEdge monitoring account using your homeowner credentials (not through Sunnova's portal).
  2. Verify you have direct access independent of Sunnova. If not, contact Enphase or SolarEdge to claim the system as the homeowner.
  3. Export your historical production data as CSV — do this now to preserve your records.
  4. Compare your annual production totals to what your contract guarantees.
  5. If there is a shortfall, document it with weather-adjusted analysis and file a claim in Sunnova's bankruptcy proceedings.

Common Questions

Sunnova went bankrupt. What happens to my service agreement?

In Chapter 11 bankruptcy, companies continue operating while reorganizing. Sunnova is obligated to continue servicing active lease and PPA contracts. However, service responsiveness may be reduced during bankruptcy proceedings. Establishing direct relationships with your equipment manufacturers (Enphase, your panel brand) and finding a local solar service contractor as a backup is prudent. See: What to do when your solar installer goes bankrupt.

I have a Sunnova loan. Does their bankruptcy affect my loan?

No — your loan is with a separate financial institution, not Sunnova Energy directly. The lender continues to service your loan independent of Sunnova's status. Your equipment is yours and is unaffected.

How do I contact Sunnova about my guarantee or service agreement?

Sunnova's customer service line is 1-866-SUNNOVA (1-866-786-6682). During a bankruptcy proceeding, also check Sunnova's bankruptcy court filings (PACER) for updates on customer claims processes and court-appointed customer ombudsman contacts if applicable.
