Your solar contract promises a number.
Your installer says it's fine.OwlWatt wisely looks out for you.

We independently measure your solar production against your contract guarantee (every day, at the panel level) and add the weather and system data needed to document any shortfall before your claim window closes.

They promised your panels would pay for themselves.

You did everything right. You researched installers, compared quotes, read the contract. You signed because the production guarantee made it feel safe. But here's the thing about guarantees: they only work if someone is watching.

What OwlWatt has measured to date.

Anonymised, cumulative measurement totals, updated as the meters report. They are measurement facts: energy measured, readings recorded, and shortfall documented against a contract guarantee. They are not a statement about how any claim ended.

How it works

You do three things. We do the rest.

You already have a day job, and checking your own solar production shouldn't become a second one. Set OwlWatt up once and we'll watch it for you. No spreadsheets, no math, no chasing your installer for an answer.

Upload your contract

Send us the solar agreement you signed. We pull out every production guarantee, measurement period, degradation clause and exclusion, then explain in plain English what you actually agreed to.

Connect your system

Link the Enphase account you already have, or plug in OwlWatt Iris, our own hardware collector. Iris captures your per-panel data at 5-second resolution, and keeps going even when your installer's cloud is down.

We measure. You'll know.

Every day, OwlWatt compares your measured production to the pvlib PVWatts model. If your system falls short, you get an alert with the data behind it and a claim report you can send.

And if the number comes up short, you get the report.

A shortfall isn’t an alert you have to act on alone. OwlWatt generates a claim report that lays out, in one document:

You download it and send it to your installer. OwlWatt never contacts your installer for you: the report is yours, and so is the decision about what to do with it. If it goes further than a conversation, a licensed attorney in your state can use the same document as evidence.

What OwlWatt does

The check nobody else is doing for you.

You've opened your installer's app and seen a number, and you still don't know whether it's a good number. That isn't you missing something. That app was built to show you production, not to tell you whether your production meets what your contract promised. Those are two different questions, and the second one is the one that decides whether your panels pay for themselves.

Contract analysis

Upload your solar agreement. OwlWatt extracts the guarantee terms and explains exactly what your installer promised and when they're obligated to deliver it.

Independent production measurement

We read your inverter data directly and cross-check it against a physics-based expected-production model. Your installer's numbers become one input we test, instead of the answer you have to take on faith.

Shortfall documentation

When measured production falls below your guarantee, OwlWatt calculates the gap in kWh and dollars, then produces a claim report citing the exact contract clauses and model parameters.

Silent failure detection

With the optional OwlWatt Iris collector feeding it panel-level data, OwlWatt catches a microinverter that stops producing (even when it looks fine in aggregate) before months of lost energy add up.

Why it matters

This is money you’re owed, not money you spent.

People spend hours hunting for forgotten cash: old bank accounts, unclaimed property, a refund nobody cashed. Your solar contract has a number in it too. If your system produces less than that number, the difference isn’t just a higher bill you already swallowed. Under a production guarantee it’s a shortfall your installer committed to make good, and nobody is going to write to tell you about it.

~$500
Illustrative annual shortfall value on a 12 kW Massachusetts system running 15% under*
Every year
Most guarantees are assessed per contract year, so a system that stays under doesn’t cost you once. It repeats for the life of the guarantee, often 10 to 25 years
1M+
U.S. solar systems whose installers have entered bankruptcy since 2020 (SEIA). A guarantee is only worth what someone can still be held to

That’s the part worth sitting with. A gap you never measure isn’t a one-time loss, it’s an annual one, quietly renewing while your app shows green. Finding out costs $9.99 a month.

*Illustration, not a typical result: a 12 kW system producing 15% below its guaranteed output, valued at Massachusetts average electricity rates ($0.33/kWh). Your own figure depends on your system size, your guarantee terms and your rate. OwlWatt measures and documents the gap; we don’t recover the money, and whether a claim succeeds depends on your contract and, if it goes that far, on a licensed attorney in your state. Plenty of systems turn out to be performing fine, and that answer has value too.

Why now

Net billing changed the math on you.

If your credits shrank and nobody explained why, you’re not imagining it. Under the old 1:1 net metering, every kilowatt-hour you exported earned a full retail credit, so a system quietly producing under its guarantee still blended into your bill. Net billing (NEM 3.0 in California, and spreading to other states) cut what you’re paid for exported power, and your savings now hinge on how much your system actually produces. So when the check gets smaller, you’re left guessing whether that’s the new rate or a system falling short. OwlWatt separates the two by measuring your actual production against your guarantee, so you know which one you’re looking at. How NEM 3.0 affects your solar savings →
