Whole Home Energy Monitors, and What They Don't Measure
A whole-home energy monitor clamps onto the two main conductors coming into your panel and measures everything the house draws. It answers "where is my electricity going." If you have solar, there is a second question it does not answer, and a decent chance you already own hardware doing half the job.
Short version. Emporia Vue is the cheap route to per-circuit detail and needs a clamp on every circuit you care about. Sense uses two clamps and machine learning to guess at appliances. If you have an Enphase IQ Gateway with consumption CTs installed, you already have whole-home measurement and can see it without buying anything. None of the three tells you whether your solar array produced what your contract promised.
How These Devices Work
A current transformer, or CT, is a split ring that clamps around a conductor and measures the magnetic field the current produces. No electrical connection, no cutting. Two CTs on the main feed give you whole-home current; combined with voltage, that is real power in watts.
Everything after that is a design choice about how much detail you want and how you get it.

The Part Solar Owners Are Rarely Told
The Enphase IQ Gateway (formerly the Envoy) supports two sets of CTs: one on the solar production circuit, and an optional pair on the main feed. The second pair is what makes the system "metered" for consumption.
If your installer fitted them, your gateway is already measuring whole-home load, continuously, and computing it the same way a dedicated monitor does. Grid flow is signed, so consumption is production plus net: when the array is making 4,000 W and the meter shows 1,200 W flowing in, the house is drawing 5,200 W.
Whether those CTs were installed is worth checking before you spend $300 on a device to measure something your roof already measures. If your monitoring app shows a consumption or "home usage" figure alongside production, they are there.
Emporia Vue and Sense Solve Different Problems
They are grouped together because they sit in the same place in the panel, and that is where the similarity stops.
Emporia Vue expands with individual circuit clamps. The data is direct measurement, not inference, so a circuit's reading is as accurate as the clamp. The cost is installation effort and physical space in a panel that may not have much, and the granularity stops at the circuit: a kitchen circuit tells you the kitchen, not the toaster.
Sense samples the mains at high frequency and tries to recognise appliances by their electrical signature at switch-on. When it works it is genuinely impressive, identifying a specific dryer with no clamp on the dryer circuit. Detection is uneven across appliance types, and devices with variable or electronically controlled loads are harder to separate than ones that simply switch on and off.
Neither is wrong. Direct measurement of the circuits you care about, or inference across all of them, is a real trade and your answer depends on whether you would rather install hardware or accept uncertainty.
Consumption Is Not Production, and the Difference Is Money
This is the distinction worth carrying away, because every device above sits on one side of it.
A whole-home energy monitor measures what you use. That is a behavioural instrument: it finds the always-on load you forgot about, tells you what the new heat pump actually costs, shows you which hours are expensive under a time-of-use rate. Useful, and it pays for itself in a household that acts on it.
Nothing in that paragraph is about your solar array meeting a commitment. If your installer contracted for 11,200 kWh a year and the system delivers 9,400, a consumption monitor will report your usage accurately and never mention it. The comparison that matters is production against a weather-adjusted expectation for your specific site, and it is a different measurement with a different baseline.

How to Tell Whether Your Consumption CTs Are Fitted
This takes about a minute and decides whether you need to buy anything.
- Open your monitoring app and look for a consumption figure. In Enphase Enlighten a metered system shows household usage alongside production, as a second line on the energy chart or an "imported from grid" figure. A production-only system shows generation and nothing else.
- Check the gateway model. The consumption CTs are an option on the metered variants of the IQ Gateway. The model is printed on the unit and appears in the app's system details.
- Look in the panel or at the gateway enclosure. The consumption CTs are two split rings around the main service conductors, wired back to the gateway. Production CTs sit on the solar circuit instead. If you find only one pair, on the solar circuit, consumption is not being measured.
If they are missing, an electrician can add them, and that is worth pricing against a dedicated monitor before deciding. If what you want is per-circuit detail, add the dedicated monitor regardless, because retrofitting the gateway's CTs will not give you that.
What This Does Not Settle
A monitor of any kind measures the present. It records what is happening now and builds a history going forward from the day it was installed.
What it cannot do is reconstruct the past. A homeowner four years into a system, wondering whether the array has been quietly underdelivering the whole time, is not helped by a device bought this week: it starts a record, it does not recover one. That asymmetry is the argument for beginning measurement earlier than feels necessary, whichever instrument you choose and whatever question you are asking.
