OwlWe're investigating Tesla solar support: what it would take, and what works today
OwlWatt does not support Tesla's own solar monitoring today. We are investigating it, and this post says what would be delivered, what stands in the way, and what already works for a Tesla-installed system. We are not announcing a launch and we have no date.
Why Tesla matters
Wood Mackenzie ranked Tesla third in 2025 US residential inverter share at 29.6%, behind Enphase (31.7%) and SolarEdge (31.3%), and first in the fourth quarter of 2025 at 33.4% (Wood Mackenzie's 2025 review). That is a large group of owners whose production numbers OwlWatt cannot read yet.
What we found
- There is an official API. Tesla publishes a Fleet API with energy endpoints: live status, site information, and daily energy history that includes solar production, under a permission scope called
energy_device_data. - It is system-level only. The data covers the whole system. There is no per-panel or per-string breakdown.
- There is no local path. Powerwall 3 has no supported local API, so an OwlWatt Iris could not read a Tesla system on the home network. Any support would come through Tesla's cloud.
What Tesla support would deliver
If we build it: daily production history, an expected-production model for the site, performance ratio, and the same guarantee math OwlWatt runs for other systems. What it would not deliver: a per-panel view, or live intraday watts. The API does not report either.
What blocks it
The main blocker is legal, not technical. Tesla's Fleet API agreement restricts making data available "to any third party other than to Users in the Application" and requires deleting data once it is no longer needed. OwlWatt's guarantee claim report goes out through the homeowner, which may fit that wording, but "may" is not enough for a paid service. We need a lawyer to read the agreement before we build anything.
Beyond that, Tesla must approve OwlWatt's application to use the API, and we have not confirmed whether Tesla bills for energy data requests. Sites with more than one Powerwall also report inflated grid import and export figures, so those numbers would need to be treated with caution.
